Welcome Back! A New Year, A Fresh Start!

It’s been a while since we last connected; I wanted to take this opportunity to say ‘Hello’ and restart things with you. For those who are new here or may have forgotten about us, I’d love to share what we’ve been up to and what we’re building at Re-Defined.

Maybe it’s important to also share how my journey started and what led me to create this organization. So well, I’m originally from India and come from a family where, besides my parents, no one ever really believed in me. I was often seen as “limited” or even as a liability. As a result, I struggled with self-confidence for the longest time.

And coming to Canada about 6.5 years ago, honestly made it worse. My capabilities were constantly questioned, and I kept hearing the daunting statement: “You don’t have Canadian experience.” That phrase haunted me for years. And as a result found myself working as a dishwasher, server at a pizza place & doing other odd jobs for almost two years, feeling stuck,……..until one day I decided, no more….I realized I have a lot more in me and cannot settle for less

At the same time, observing my surroundings, I noticed a pattern: most people working on the service side were immigrants, individuals from BIPOC communities, which made me wonder why and upon speaking to 10K+ students, realized how it becomes an automatic career route for many.

I wanted to change the narrative, to ensure that those working in these roles were there by choice because they enjoyed serving others—not because they felt it was their only option or it was meant for them just because they are immigrants

That’s when I started Re-Defined. It began with my own journey of rediscovering myself and realizing how much community, upskilling, and mentorship had helped me transform my life and realize my value. And as such, I wanted to create access to those same resources for others as well to help UNLOCK potential for every student

Now, two years later, Re-Defined has grown into a community of 50,000+ members strong. Our mission is to support the 1.5 million international students in Canada with their personal and professional development by creating access to a supportive community, access to the right mentors and upskilling. And hope this newsletter becomes a valuable part of that mission.
